Research - Thriller Analysis Classwork

 2/3/2025 AS Media Studies Class

Thriller Opening - April

Sound- continuous arpeggiated notes adding suspense as they speed up and slow down.

Lighting- in the establishing shot the weather is dull and grey, inside the house there is standard down lighting.

Mise en scene- Standard home décor, middle class, average/ordinary lives

Camera- really unique 360 degree shot as the camera spins around on the table to reveal the next interviewee. Cool effect with the van and how the girl disappears; verisimilitude.

AS Media Final draft thriller opening

Sound- dark brooding music, ambient, constant, distorted frequency sounds and heavy tom hits.

Lighting- black and white

Mise en scene- filmed in a church, empty, appropriate décor, the shoes they wear also add to the narrative for example her socks and the nuns boots.

Camera- sharp edits and great pov shots, establishing shot of the church, and over the shoulder shots, also some low angle close ups of her face to show her facial expressions.

Paper Boy

Sound-  Diegetic 50's Kitchen song playing on his radio, upbeat but instead of being used for a happy scene it is used to add to the suspense of the film.  Music matches to what the actor is doing. When his hand hovers over the revolver in the drawer there is a jolt in the music. And the fade down of the music into the diegetic sound of the phone vibrating brings us into the world of the actor.

Lighting- Bright house lighting, lots of colour.

Mise en scene- Fitting props and costumes, bike equipment, helmet, Boots which a spy may wear and a drawer organized showing the spy may live alone and a very simple life keeping only the necessities.

Camera- Lots of POV shots and quick cuts showing the speed her can get ready in.

Excemption Thriller opening sequence

Sound- Diegetic breathing and tapping, in the start there is no music just the viewer left alone with the kidnapped actors, loud noises begin, and a bass filled, drum hits rhythm starts.

Lighting- Green and Grey lighting

Mise en scene- Lots of weeds, dead grass, run down and abandoned home, blooded clothes.

Camera- tracking shots, and close ups, over the shoulder shots as well.
